Chaplain's Message
Mother’s Day which falls on the second Sunday in May officially started on May 10, 1908 at Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. That makes May 11, 2008 the one hundredth (100th) Mother’s Day anniversary. Poems, books, songs and other works have been written and created in honor of mothers. The poem, “You Were There”, by an unknown author is a beautiful tribute to mothers.
You were there when we took our first steps,
And went unsteadily across the floor.
You pushed and prodded: encouraged and guided,
Until our steps took us out the door…
You worry now "Are they ok?"
Is there more you could have done?
As we walk the paths of our unknown
You wonder "Where have my children gone?"
Where we are is where you have led us,
With your special love you showed us a way,
To believe in ourselves and the decisions we make.
Taking on the challenge of life day-to-day.
And where we go you can be sure,
In spirit you shall never be alone.
For where you are is what matters most to us,
Because to us that will always be home...
Our love and eternal gratitude to all mothers.
Happy Mother’s Day!

PRAYER / COLLECT
Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Have a good week!

Josephine Butler
Social Reformer
30 May
Josephine Butler (née Grey) was born in April 1828, and baptized on this day that year, in Northumberland. She married an Anglican priest in 1852. She became incensed by the way contemporary society treated prostitutes, most of whom were forced into such activity through desperate poverty. From 1869, she campaigned for the repeal of the legislation which put all opprobrium onto the women concerned, and the issue became international after she travelled in Europe addressing meetings in 1874-75. Her campaign succeeded with the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Act in 1883. She was a devout Anglican and a woman of prayer, basing her spirituality on that of St Catherine of Siena, whose biography she wrote. She died on 30 December 1906.
