Chaplain’s Message

The blessings that come our way and the opportunity to do good present themselves almost every minute of the day. The All Saints and Souls Day Commemoration at the start of the month of November gives us the chance to remember and think of those who have gone before us.

There are the saints who have led exemplary lives and have been recognized and whose names have been placed in the Christian calendar. Also, there are the saints who not too long ago passed away and whose memory are etched in our minds and hearts.

We love and remember the souls who in one way or another have touched our lives. Their attitude, good works and kindness inspire us to do the same.

Then, there are the saints who live and work right beside us – people at home, at school, in the workplace and in the field who honestly and humbly toil to provide for their family and others.

As we sit on the family dinner table, we give thanks for the food, the saints and the opportunity to live and to love.

God bless.

Poems and Prayers

Come, Ye Thankful People

Come, ye thankful people, come —
Raise the song of harvest home.
All is safely gathered in
Ere the winter storms begin.
God, our Maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied.
Come to God’s own temple, come —
Raise the song of harvest home.

All the world is God’s own field,
Fruit unto His praise to yield.
Wheat and tares together sown,
Unto joy or sorrow grown.
First the blade and then the ear,
Then the full corn shall appear.
Lord of harvest, grant that we
Wholesome grain and pure may be.

Thank you, O Lord,
for Thy gifts which
We are about to receive
From Thy bounty.
Amen.

Saint of the Month

All Saints and Souls Day

1 November‑All Saints Day‑Principal Feast‑Gold or White
2 November‑All Souls Day‑Lesser Festival‑Purple, or Black, or White

From its earliest days, the Church has recognised as its foundation stones those heroes of the faith whose lives have excited others to holiness and have assumed a communion with the Church on earth and the Church in heaven.

Celebrating the feast of All Saints' began in the fourth century. At first, it was observed on the Sunday after the feast of Pentecost; this was to link the disciples who received the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the 'foundation of the Church, with those who were martyrs, giving their lives as witnesses for the faith. In the eighth century, a pope dedicated a chapel to All Saints in St Peter's at Rome on 1 November. Within a century, this day was observed in England and Ireland as All Saints' Day. (1 November-All Saints Day)

'The believer's pilgrimage of faith is lived out with the mutual support of all the people of God. In Christ all the faithful, both living and departed, are bound together in a communion of prayer.' This simple, agreed statement from the Anglican--Roman Catholic International Commission explains the purpose of the celebration on this day. Since its foundation, Christians have recognised that the Church, the ecclesia, the assembled people of God, is at its most perfect when it recognises its unity in God's redeeming love with all who have said, who say now, and who will say in the fullness of time, 'Jesus is Lord'. (2 November-All Souls Day).
