Chaplain’s Message

The theme for the 2009‑2010 School Year is “be respectful of each other.”

Learning to accept ones own limitations and strengths is fundamental to growth and personal development. It is in our acceptance of our differences that will lead to respecting each other.

Jesus taught and lived the foundational value of respect. In fact, his teaching revolved around it. The command to love has its clearest expression in Jesus’ command to “always treat others as you would like them to treat you.” (Matthew 7:12)

Let us with Jesus show our love for everyone by accepting and respecting each other for what and who they are.

  • 1‘Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. (Matthew 7:1)
  • 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
  • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal. (Matthew 6:19 / Proverbs 23:4‑5)
  • 42And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple‑truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward. (Matthew 10:42 / 2 Kings 4:8)
  • 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:29‑30)
  • 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. (Matthew 12:50)
  • 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. (Matthew 18:20)
  • 14‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’ (Matthew 19:14)

Poems and Prayers

A Friend by Your Side

“I’m glad you’re my friend,” said Adam.

“I’m glad you’re my friend, too,” said Heather. “Let’s go play in the park.” The two children walked to the small park next to Adam’s house.

Adam and Heather went to the same school. They had the same teacher. They did everything together! They were best friends. When Adam told a joke, Heather laughed the loudest. When Heather was sad, Adam would always cheer her up.

They sat on a stone wall and looked at the flowers in the park. Butterflies flitted about together.
“Look at those two butterflies,” said Adam. “Do you think they are best friends, too?”

A friend loves at all times.
– Proverbs 17:17a

Saint of the Month

Florence Nightingale

(Nurse, Social Reformer)
13 August - Commemoration

Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 into a wealthy family. In the face of their opposition, she insisted that she wished to train in nursing. In 1853, she finally achieved her wish and headed her own private nursing institute in London. Her efforts at improving conditions for the wounded during the Crimean War won her great acclaim and she devoted the rest of her life to reforming nursing care. Her school at St Thomas’s Hospital became significant in helping to elevate nursing into a profession. An Anglican, she remained committed to a personal mystical religion which sustained her through many years of poor health until her death in 1910.
