X‑Country Running Meet – Faith Academy

September 19th, 2009

Twenty‑three of Brent’s fittest athletes gave up part of their long weekend to compete in a running race at Faith Academy this past weekend. The mid‑season race was a repeat of the course run 3 weeks ago which allowed the athletes to compare how much they have improved over that time. Many of our runners showed huge gains since the first race of the season and tackled the hilly course aggressively.

Again we placed 7 athletes in the top 10 in their respective divisions, including all four of the middle school athletes we had competing. Dai Kikuchi had another successful outing beating all other runners over the 2.5km course. Following closely in 7th place was Sam Trower. Naomi Hilton ran strong and placed 3rd overall and Lene Grimstad was 6th.

In the upper school division, Taj Pereira blazed over the challenging course 1:30mins faster then 3 weeks ago and placed 6th overall. Josiah Fogle ran tough and was the 2nd Brent finisher. Following closely behind was Jae Yoo, a first time racer, who had a great race and was Brent’s 3rd finisher. This time around the upper school girls team also ran the 5km course. Again the team was led by Lynn Ong who placed 6th overall, and Hye Jin Roh only 8 seconds behind in 7th place. Allison Ford is continuing to show big improvements and was Brent’s 3rd finisher.

Brent Varsity Tennis and Club

This year the Brent tennis team welcomes 16 players (8 boys and 8 girls), at different skill levels, who are all eager to hone their skills. Thus, attendance at the tennis courts is seen daily; rain or shine. During non-rainy days, players train by participating in drills, game simulations, doubles matches, and even singles matches against their coaches. When the courts are too wet, the tennis team is handled by a fitness coach to improve on their agility and footwork. Training always lasts for 2 hours.

On behalf of the players, they are pleased to be trained by at least 2 professional level Filipino tennis players. Coach Ailene, – who participates in both national and international competitions – and 2 other new coaches are working hard to prepare their players for the annual APAC Tennis Tournament, which will be held in HKIS, this year. Last year, the team performed well with the Girls and Boys Team placing overall at 2nd and 3rd place. With the addition of another Top National Filipino Tennis Player, Louis Lopez, joining Shanine Olivarez, the team is looking forward for an exciting and promising tournament.

To prepare for APAC, a tournament will be held in early October. Throughout the year, the team stays active to participate in other tournaments, such as ISTA.

To succeed as a tennis player, one needs to possess endurance, agility, power, concentration, focus, determination, perseverance, and RESPECT.

Cross Country Race at Brent – September 5th, 2009

The Brent cross‐country running team was back at it again this past weekend. Brent hosted 10 other schools for the annual invitational 3.2km and 5km races around the campus and Brentville. The morning rains lead to a soggy and muddy course, which only motivated the Lions more.

We have a small but mighty group of middle school athletes that have been very successful this season. Dai Kikuchi dominated the middle school boy’s field leading from start to finish and posting a stellar time of 12:39 for the 3.2km course. New comers Sam Trower and Greg Maleval also ran impressive races and will definitely be runners to watch for in the upcoming races. Naomi Hilton continues to race faster each week and placed 2nd in the middle school girls division. First time racer Lene Grimstad ran a great race and placed 7th overall.

In the upper school boys division, Josiah Fogle was the first Brent runner in. Despite some stomach issues, and running the final kilometer bare foot, Josiah placed 10th overall in 21:03. Also feeling under the weather but still racing was our second Brent finisher Taj Pereira, followed closely by J.P. Lafferty and Tim Dobermann. The rest of the boy’s team also ran very well and many personal best times were set. The upper school girls also ran the 5km course and were extremely dominating placing all three runners in the top 5 places overall. Lynn Ong led all girls winning with a personal best time of 24:06. Hye Jin Roh followed closely in 2nd place also with a personal best time of 24:52. The third Brent runner was Julie Wee placing 5th overall. Congratulations to the entire team for a fantastic meet.

X-Country Running 2009

The Brent x-country team sprinted off to a great start of the season last weekend at Faith Academy. The MS group and US girls all ran a 2.5km loop, while the US boys ran a 5km course. The course was very hilly and a big challenge for the first race of the year.  However, the Brent team persevered and managed to place 7 runners in the top 10 of the four age categories.  Our middle school group was lead by Dai Kikuchi and Naomi Hilton both finishing in 2nd place. In the upper school, veteran Lynn Ong lead the girls team to a 4th place finish followed closely by Allison Ford in 6th and Hye Jin Roh in 7th. On the boys side Josiah Fogle burned up the hilly 5km course in just over 20mins to place 4th overall. Taj Pereira was the next Brent finisher with an excellent time and a 13th place finish overall. Congratulations to all of the Brent x-country team on a fantastic first race of the season.
