APAC Boys Soccer 2009
The Brent Varsity Boys soccer team had an outstanding season this year. During their pre‑season training and practice games, our boys worked hard in every aspect of the game. The varsity had 7 practice games during the pre‑season and won 4 games, had 2 losses and 1 draw. It was a very good experience for our boys since all of the practice games were against college and men’s teams. Because of that, the team improved a lot.
During the APAC tournament which was held in Shanghai, China last April 15‑19, 2009, our boys had the first game against HKIS. The score was 0‑2 in favor of the opponent. Second game was against the host team, Shanghai American School, Pudong. The score was 0‑2 in favor of SAS. The third game was against British International School. The score was a draw at 0‑0. the next game was against CA, Canadian Academy. We lost 0‑5 and the last game was against AISG. We won 2‑1. We played against AISG for 5th place and won 2‑1.
The result of the tournament was a satisfactory one. Despite placing 5th in the tournament, the team improved in all aspects of the game and will continue to develop for future APAC tournaments. Let’s go Lions!!!
Brent Junior Touch Rugby Team Wins At Alabang 10’s!
Last March 7, 2009, the Brent International School Manila Touch Rugby Club joined the Alabang 10’s Rugby Tournament which was held at the Alabang Country Club. Brent sent two (2) teams to compete in the Junior Touch Rugby Tournament: one in the 8 and under division, which were composed of boys from grades 1-3, and the other in the 12 and under division, whose players came from grades 4-6.
The 8 and under division team was led by their team captain, Jason Schirmer, the only player in the team who is not a beginner in playing touch. Their team played against British School Manila (BSM) and European International School-Manila. The first game against British School Manila was a big win for the boys with a final score of 5-0. Scores came from breakaways of Joseph Jung, Nicky Lindqvist, Brian Strybel, and Jason Schirmer. This is the first time Brent had a joined a junior touch rugby tournament and we are proud to say that our team emerged as CHAMPIONS!!!! This is Brent’s first time to take home a championship trophy for touch rugby!
The Brent 12 and under team went up against BSM Red Team, BSM Blue Team, Japan Touch Rugby Team, and Tuloy Touch Rugby Team. As they were warming up, some of the players were very nervous and excited at the same time for it was their first touch rugby tournament. Headed by their team captain, Tanner Sale, the first team Brent faced was the BSM Blue Team. It was only during the final minutes of the game that BSM scored. After their first game, the team became more confident and further improved during the next three games. The other three (3) teams were certainly bigger and more experienced than them. The touch tournament at the Alabang 10’s definitely served as a learning experience for the whole team.
Lions Roar In Guangzhou!
The Brent Girls Basketball Team continued its winning tradition by capturing its 10th Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) title in 14 years. The tournament, held at the American International School of Guangzhou, marked the first year of the APAC expansion where the member schools competed in two divisions (Asia and Pacific). The schools bracketed with Brent in the Pacific Division were Canadian Academy (CA Falcons), Hong Kong International School (HKIS Dragons), American International School of Guangzhou (AISG Rams), Shanghai American School‑Pudong (SAS Eagles) and guest team Clifford International School (CIS).
In the finals, the lions avenged their only loss in round‑robin play by beating the tough HKIS Dragons, 53‑36. Co‑captains Amy Ahomiro (29pt, 16 rb) and Klarrizze Posadas (17 pt, three 3‑pointers) played huge games in leading the team to a decisive victory. Sofia Padilla (5pt, 14rb), Kaya Munro, Misha Buensuceso, Lucy Sung and Jamie Wolfe were all solid on defense. Making valuable contributions were Bianca Mackill, Vanessa Baguiwet, Gaby Garcia, Julie Wee, and Hokulea Cabrera.
Named to the All‑APAC selection were senior Kaya Munro, junior Amy Ahomiro, and sophomore Klarrizze Posadas.
Aside from winning their third straight APAC title, the lions also successfully defended their Southern Luzon Colleges and Universities Athletics Association (SLCUAA) crown and finished 2nd in the League of Southern Manila Schools (LSMS).
With a young core of players, the team is looking forward to the “super” tournament next year which will feature all member schools. Go Lions!!!

Brent’s Greatest Touch Rugby Season Ender
January 30‑31, 2009 – Fourteen (14) Brent touch rugby players travelled to Singapore and played a total of 6 games against Singapore highschool teams. Out of the 14, 5 were varsity and 9 were from junior varsity. Obviously, the girls were worried because there weren’t enough varsity players. However, the team pulled it off just fine. They improved significantly with each game that they played until finally, they secured a win — the last game of the tournament! The other half of the Brent Touch Rugby Team were left behind to play in the final school league game of the season. They battled it out against the UP Touch Rugby Club and the ISM Varsity team at the ISM Campus.
Brent’s first 3 games were against the French School of Singapore. The teams were tougher than expected. However, Brent did not give up. The games were tight against their Junior Varsity while the game against their Varsity team proved to be difficult. The games were an excellent tune up for the main games on the Saturday.
Brent played superb on the following day. They played against Singapore American School, and United World College’s (UWC) Team A and Team B.
Playing against the UWC B was exciting and at the same time nerve-wracking. Kristen Lafferty scored a touchdown halfway through the game, making it 1‑1. It was only during the final 30 seconds that UWC B retaliated. We almost won against UWC B with a final score of 1‑2.
Our final game was against UWC A. This was Brent’s best performance for the whole season. Everything seemed to be in sync – the team’s passing and catching ability, driving straight, looking for the gaps, and substituting, it looked like they played as Brent’s strongest team ever to exist. Myung Sun “Melanie” Kim scored the first touchdown for Brent. It was an offside call by the referee that opened the hole for Melanie to score. The next two (2) touchdowns were done by Mia Ocampo. For one of the touchdowns, Mia did a fake pass, which the defender fell for, widening the gap to score. Brent won with a final score of 3‑2.
While half of the Brent team were playing in Singapore on the Saturday morning, the other half were simultaneously playing at the ISM Touch Rugby Tournament in the Philippines. They played extremely well against the UP team. Alex Heinen scored early in the game. Midway through the game, Tiffany Faulkner scooted from the middle of the field and ran all to the touchdown zone. She passed to Maika Uemoto, the winger, to score. For the third touchdown, Lynn Ong had the ball. The UP defenders missed the touch and Lynn secured the third touchdown for Brent. They led all the way until the final seconds of the ball game. Brent almost won with a final score of 3‑4.
Overall, one can be very proud of the Brent Touch Rugby Team. They have come a long way. In just
three (3) years, Brent was able to produce one of the finest touch rugby teams in the country.
Congratulations to all the members of the Brent Touch Rugby Team! We are all so proud of you!
